Possum's Honey Bread

Last year, our library gave away a bunch of old books that apparently hadn't been checked out in a very long time. We grabbed a bunch of them to add to our collection, and there was a real gem in the bunch. How to Make Possum's Honey Bread by Carla Stevens was published in 1975. This particular copy shows hardly any wear, and I just can't believe it! It is the cutest little story about Possum spending the day, teaching his friends how to make honey bread. Everyone joins in except Raccoon, who decides to fish by himself. He does a little pouting about the fact that he can't make honey bread as well as Possum can. He finally gives in and tries some of Possum's bread, and finishes the day by going fishing with his friend Woodchuck. All through the story, Possum gives instructions on how to make his bread. The recipe, along with some variations, are included in the back. Of course, Camden was intent on making some of Possum's bread, so that is what we did after he came home from school yesterday. Camden just loved pouring all the ingredients into the bowl, stirring and kneading, and then watching the bread rise.

Reading the recipe

Stirring the sticky dough

Kneading the dough (you'll notice that between stirring and kneading, Camden "disrobed". Apparently he didn't want to be restricted in any way.

The finished product - - delicious, by the way. Camden gets an A+ for his first attempt at bread baking

that's so AWESOME!! We got some of those books too and we got a great one as well that we read almost every night I was going to show it to you if you ever wanted to use if for storytime. Anyway it's called The Cock That Couldn't Crow. It's about this poor rooster who can't crow and the whole farm helps him learn. It's very funny. ttyl!

I know when I talked with Camden last night, he was very excited as he waited for his bread to rise. I see he also has tattoos now! The boy is getting very domestic.

Wow! That is so awesome, Heather!!! Great job, Camden!

Yes, those are tattoos, alright. He seems to have to have a pirate tattoo on his body at all times, these days.

I chuckled at the "nearly-naked baker" photo! Camden sure looked intent on what he was doing.

He tends to "strip" whenever the mood strikes him. Luckily we've curbed the stripping WHEREVER the mood strikes him. There use to be a time where he'd take ALL of his clothes off, no matter where he was! Ahhh, to be a preschooler....

I wonder if this is how The Naked Chef started out . . The bread looks so yummy--can you share the recipe?

We made this bread when I was in first grade, way back in 1976-77. I'm now 41 years old, and a homemaker, and this is my favorite bread to make. It's amazing how childhood memories can stay with you so very long. Camden will keep this memory with him for his whole life, hopefully. When I smell the bread baking, I'm immediately taken back to the wonderful days of my own childhood. I'd love to find a copy of the book somewhere. Thanks for posting this, as it made me smile to see another child enjoy this book and experience the way I did.

My second grade teacher gave me this book for my birthday in 1976! I used it then as a child and have since used it to bake with my daughter. It’s falling apart, but still going!
