Sawdust and Nails

Steve and I are becoming a couple of Scouting nerds. Camden joined Cub Scouts last year and I volunteered to be a Den Mother, but unfortunately spent most of the year floundering because I had absolutely no clue what I was doing. Then, I kind of got shanghaied into doing it again this year, but the good news was that Steve had recently returned from Iraq. Even though Steve was a Cub Scout drop-out himself, it seems that in his middle age, he's become quite obsessed with the whole Scouting scene. He breathed a healthy dose of excitement and enthusiasm into the whole gig, and I have to say that now I am having all kinds of fun being a Den Mother. My little den of Bear Cubs are learning, thriving, and are well on their way to earning their Bear badge. Hooray!
Today, Steve took part of the afternoon off from work to be our special guest in instructing Achievement #20 - Sawdust and Nails. He planned to build toolboxes with the boys, and spend the last couple of days preparing the activity and pre-cutting a lot of the pieces so that we would be able to get them put together during our meeting time.
It was a huge success and I really think all of the boys were super-excited to have made their own tool box. I hope they will all have their tool boxes for years to come and will remember the fun we all had this afternoon.

Tim was Declan's Boy Scout leader for the past few years and has only recently given it to another father. He is also the Girl Scouts troop assistant(I'm not good with group activities plus I'm lazy). He puts in an incredible amount of work so I know what you have to put into this. The boys will have happy memories from this.

I also notice that the canoe isn't in these picture. Is it done?

Kate, the canoe currently lives in Steve's office in the basement, actually! He still has to weave the dacron yarn and cover it with the fabric. Alas, his job has gotten in the way of his canoe-building for the time being. However, he recently reassembled the canoe molds in preparation to begin work on canoe #2.

Melissa, I was so happy to see your comment!

Nicky, they had a great time! Steve plans to take over for me next year and I can tell he is going to be a great den leader!

So nice to see that you are back at blogging. I love the pics and updates! I was a GS leader for 6 years for Dorothy's troop and we had lots of fun. It helped me keep my sanity when I was in grad school! I just heard from one of my now-22 year old scouts and she mentioned how scouting helped her to keep her sanity when she was a kid. I am SURE that these boys will keep their tool boxes for years to come! Kudos to you and Steve. Way to go!
